If you've never seen Leonardo DeCaprio's portrayal of Jim Carroll in the Basketball Diaries try to find a copy and view it. Leo's pretty friggin good in it and it's a decent portrayal of Carroll's descent into junkiedom.

I probably never would have heard about this if I didn't come to your blog on my lunch break. Around 1989 or 1990, I saw Jim Carroll read his poetry and sing in Santa Barbara on the campus of UCSB. Among the members of his band that night was Ray Manzarek. I can't say the show was really all that great from a technical aspect, but it was a very important part of shaping/reinforcing my world view (I would have been 20 or 21 at the time). So, now you know who is partially to blame!
